Tips for a great event

Duk Op seeks to promote events that actively work to remove participation barriers based on background, gender, age, and mental or physical health.

Physical accessibility

  • Are there ramps, elevators, wide doors, and accessible toilets?
  • Information on access to public transportation, carpooling organization, and available parking.

Facilities

  • Toilets: Where is the nearest toilet?
  • Seating options: Are there flexible options, such as wide chairs or chairs without armrests?
  • Break areas: Are there quiet areas with low noise and light?
  • Service animals: Are service animals welcome, and are there any facilities for them?
  • Food and drinks: Is the food vegan, and can food allergies be accommodated?
  • Children: Is the event child-friendly, and if so, why or why not?

Communication

  • Language: Translate your event into English (e.g., indicate [English below] in the description).
  • Use text to describe important information about the event, rather than relying solely on images. This allows people who are visually impaired or dyslexic to have the information read aloud.
  • Indicate if there will be interpreters or sign language interpreters present.
  • Sound amplification: Are speakers being used?
  • Contact and safety person: Information about the presence of a contact and safety person who can help with practical matters and increase safety during the event.

Including this information makes it easier for more people to participate and feel welcome!
