Solidarity event every Monday evening at 7pm at Speakers Corner until there is a ceasefire in Gaza.
Although everything suggests that the Israeli state is carrying out an ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in Gaza, the international community has so far failed to demand a ceasefire. Even Faroese politicians remain passive and ambiguous about where they stand. This even though international human rights experts for months have warned us about the unfolding genocide in Gaza, and even though South Africa now has taken legal steps at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) accusing Israel of breaking the Genocide Convention.
There are many reasons for why we find it necessary to meet in solidarity with the Palestinian people at the moment. Palestinians in the Faroe Islands deserve to feel our support and care these days. Many of us also have Palestinian friends and acquaintances, which are on our minds. Some Faroese people have also visited, lived in and/or carried out relief work in Palestine. Some of us have been following and sympathizing with the Free Palestine movement for a long time. Others are motivated by purely humanitarian reasons, perhaps without having much knowledge of or a clear position on the 75 years old conflict between Israel and Palestine. Moreover, in the past months we have also seen a spike in Jewish communities around the world showing their solidarity with the Palestinian people and distancing themselves from the Israeli state and its oppression of the Palestinian people.
This event is for everyone whose thoughts and hearts are with the Palestinian people these days.
We will light candles, hear 2-3 speeches, have a cup of tea/coffee and perhaps sing a song - depending on the mood of the evening.
