Thursday the 20th of June marks the UN's international World Refugee Day, and the first day of Refugee Week in Copenhagen 2024.
We choose to make this a memorable and informative evening, shedding light on refugees, their journeys, and their stories. During the event, we move through topics such as the rights and conditions of asylum seekers in Denmark, young people taking risks to seek refuge, and humanitarian work across borders.

With community dinner, film, presentations and much more, we welcome you to the very first edition of Refugee Week celebration. This year’s Refugee Week will be centered around Nørrebro, Copenhagen from the 20th to 22nd of June. 16:00 -📍Doors Open at The Migrant Circle & welcome beverages are served🍹☀️

17:00 - Introduction to the Danish asylum system by Michala Bendixen:
🎤Michala Clante Bendixen is the chairperson of Refugees Welcome. She received the Human Rights Award in 2014, and has almost 20 years of experience working with refugees and asylum seekers. During the lecture, she explains the different stages within the Danish asylum system, how many asylum seekers arrive in Denmark, how asylum inquiries are assessed, who is rejected, and who gets to stay.
18:30 - Community Dinner:
🍽️ The introduction will be followed by a delicious hot meal provided by The Migrant Circle, where we encourage everyone to initiate conversations and meet each other.

19:15 - Short presentation about ANaR by Manilla Ghafuri
🎤Manilla Ghafuri is a co-founder of ANaR (Afghan Network and Resources) and winner of the Human Rights Award in 2022. Manilla will give us insight into the conditions in Afghanistan since the Taliban took over - conditions that still force many Afghanis to flee.

19:30 - Documentary Screening - Shadow Game
🎬 After the presentation, we’re screening the award-winning documentary “Shadow Game” (2021) - a journey through the dark side of Europe. The film follows underage boys from different countries as they risk their lives on an unpredictable journey that often takes months or years.

21:00 - Panel Discussion:
💬We gather once again for a moderated panel discussion with Michala Bendixen, Manilla Ghafuri, and Monica Ghafuri from ANarR, joined by Fedaa Sultan from The Migrant Circle. The discussion will explore the themes of the film from both personal and professional perspectives, offering deeper insights and fostering an engaging further dialogue

The Migrant Circle:
Is Copenhagen's new community space for refugees, migrants and asylum seekers. An extension of the Sit-in Movement's work and fight for basic rights and a humane asylum system.
Refugees Welcome:
Is a small, humanitarian organization offering legal advice and help to refugees/asylum seekers and advocacy work for refugees in Denmark.
ANaR:
ANaR is a humanitarian NGO founded in 2021 that supports the poorest part of the civilian population in Afghanistan, through information work, collections and Afghan cultural events.

Refugee Days CPH:
Our celebrations encompass a variety of initiatives throughout the year. Initiatives such as Refugee Film Festival, Refugee Week Celebration and numerous other workshops, events and happenings in Copenhagen. Through a diverse program of cultural, educational, and artistic events, we shape and establish connections that go beyond labels, fostering a deep understanding of the challenges faced by those who are forced to flee, those who can move and those who choose to stay.

What is Refugee Week?
In November last fall Refugee Days launched Refugee Film Festival - the first refugee-centered film festival in all of Scandinavia. Now, for the first time with pride we bring Refugee Week to Denmark!
Originating in London UK in 1998, Refugee Week is celebrated every year in conjunction with International Refugee Day on the 20th of June. Refugee Week is an annual celebration of the resilience, creativity and contribution of refugees and asylum seekers across the globe. And it has since spread internationally, with festivals and events taking place simultaneously in different countries around the world.

Torsdag den 20. juni er det FN's internationale flygtningedag, og den første dag i Refugee Week i København 2024.
Vi ønsker at gøre dette til en mindeværdig og informativ aften, der kaster lys over flygtninge, deres rejser og deres historier. 17:00 - Introduktion til det danske asylsystem ved Michala Bendixen:
🎤Michala Clante Bendixen er formand for Refugees Welcome. Hun modtog Menneskerettighedsprisen i 2014, og har næsten 20 års erfaring med at arbejde med flygtninge og asylansøgere. Under foredraget fortæller Michala om de forskellige stadier i det danske asylsystem, hvor mange asylansøgere der ankommer til Danmark, hvordan asylhenvendelser tages i betragtning, hvem får afslag, og hvem får ophold.
18:30 - Fællesspisning:
🍽️ Introduktionen bliver efterfulgt af et lækkert varmt måltid serveret af Migrantcirklen, hvor vi opfordrer alle til at indlede samtaler og møde hinanden.

19:15 - Kort oplæg om ANaR ved Manilla Ghafuri
🎤Manilla Ghafuri er medstifter af ANaR (Afghan Network and Resources) og vinder af Menneskerettighedsprisen i 2022. Manilla vil give os indsigt i forholdene i Afghanistan siden Talebans overtagelse - vilkår der desværre fortsat sender mange afghanere på flugt.

19:30 – Dokumentarvisning: Shadow Game
🎬 Efter præsentationen viser vi den prisvindende dokumentarfilm "Shadow Game" (2021) - en rejse gennem den mørke side af Europa. Filmen følger mindreårige drenge fra forskellige lande, mens de risikerer deres liv på en uforudsigelig rejse, der ofte tager måneder eller år.

21:00 - Panelsamtale:
💬Efter filmen samles vi igen til en modereret panelsamtale med Michala Bendixen, Manilla Ghafuri og Monica Ghafuri fra ANaR, sammen med Fedaa Sultan fra Migrantcirklen.

Migrancirklen:
Er Københavns nye medborgersted for flygtninge, migranter og asylansøgere. En forlængelse af sit-in bevægelsens arbejde og kamp for grundlæggende rettigheder og et humant asylsystem.

Refugees Welcome:
Er en lille, humanitær organisation, der tilbyder juridisk rådgivning og hjælp til flygtninge/asylansøgere og fortalerarbejde for flygtninge i Danmark.

ANaR:
ANaR er en humanitær NGO grundlagt i 2021, der støtter den fattigste del af civilbefolkningen i Afghanistan gennem oplysningsarbejde, indsamlinger og afghanske kulturarrangementer.

Refugee Days CPH:
Vores rejringer omfatter en række initiativer i løbet af året. Initiativer som Refugee Film Festival, Refugee Week Celebration og talrige andre workshops, events og happenings i København. Gennem et mangfoldigt program af kulturelle, informative og kunstneriske begivenheder etablerer forbindelser, der gennemtrænger fordomme, og fremmer en dyb forståelse af de udfordringer, mennesker står overfor. Både dem som er tvunget på flugt, dem der migrerer, og dem der vælger at blive.
