constructive climate journalism

by Mellemfolkeligt Samvirke Aarhus

Southern Germany hit by floods | Warmest winter ever measured | Climate scientists are scared as hell

In the past years, climate change has definitely made it to the headlines of mainstream media. Many expected that the increased awareness of climate change would motivate action and engagement in the general public. However, this has not been the case. In fact, for many people, it is having the opposite effect: the many negative headlines are provoking distress and overwhelm, causing many to turn away from the climate agenda. So what is the media doing wrong?

In this workshop, Amanda Büchert will share insights from media, communication, and journalism research about how audiences react to and (dis)engage with news and information about climate change. Further, she will share research-based recommendations for creating constructive climate journalism aimed at motivating people to engage with the climate agenda rather than turn away. You will also start working on your own constructive climate stories.

About the facilitator: Amanda Büchert is a Danish anthropologist and journalist. Amanda has been actively engaged in the climate change agenda for more than ten years and has specialized within climate journalism. In her Master’s thesis, she investigated how young people in Denmark experience and react to news and information about climate change. Based on this, Amanda produced a report with recommendations for constructive climate journalism which she will share in the workshop.

This event is part of the Climate Justice Days. A week-long festival about climate justice. Check out the rest of the program here https://dukop.dk/6656/
