Body politic(s) seminar - Ownership of bodies or master of actions, natural law and slavery in 18th century Denmark

As a part of the body politic(s) open seminar series organised by Aarhus University, Department of philosophy and history of ideas, will Mads Langballe Jensen from Lund University present a lecture on "Ownership of bodies or mastery over actions? Natural law and slavery in 18th century Denmark".

This lecture will show how Denmark engaged in the slave-trade, as well as how the debate and conceptualization of it in the 18th century took form. What traditions it drew on and what constellation it took.

It is important to understand and to not be ignorant of Denmark's historical role in the slave-trade, and try to understand on a historical basis, what went down and what cultural conditions was used by some to justify their horrific actions, and on what conditions others where arguing and fighting against it.
