Art exhibition Girl in the Tangerine

by Mellemfolkeligt Samvirke Aarhus

“Girl in the Tangerine” is a conceptual artist with a scientific background in Natural Sciences. Her art work is inspired by the beauty of northern landscapes, the cultural characteristics of remote regions and the knowledge she has gained on her many journeys to the Arctic. Most of her projects start with an idea that arises from subjects which are related to biogeosciences.
The exhibited art collection has been exclusively made for presentation at Domen during the Climate Justice Days in Aarhus. Here she focuses on one of the regions that are most vulnerable to climate change – Greenland, the country that experiences the most rapid warming on Earth. As a consequence of global warming, the Greenlandic Ice Sheet with its many glaciers, currently melts at a record pace. The Greenlandic coastline faces massive shoreline erosion caused by sea level rise as a result of increasing melting of the ice. Greenhouse gasses, which have been enclosed as solid carbon materials such as oil and coal for millions of years, are being released to the atmosphere and have huge impacts on Earth`s population.
These three concepts of ice loss, coastal erosion and carbon release are expressed in the “Girl in the Tangerine`s” portfolio. Each art work represents a Greenlandic region shown on collaged and re-imagined geological maps. The aim is to draw attention to Greenland as one of the most climate change-affected regions in the world through the abstractions and colours in the art works.
