Denmark is not a green pioneer ⚠️
Join us for a short film screening in Folkets Café on wednesday 13th november, starting at 17:00. We’ll hear about the insane nonsense used to back up Denmark’s claims to being a ‘global climate policy leader’ but also get to see some beautiful Estonian forestscapes 🌳
As the climate crisis worsens, there’s a scramble to present industrial activity as sustainable. Burning forest biomass is supposedly a ‘renewable’ source of heat and electricity because trees regrow; countries like Denmark use this as justification for importing vast quantities of wood chips and pellets to burn. This is affecting Baltic forests drastically, as the demand for biomass is driving up logging volumes, thus fragmenting forest habitats and destroying biodiversity, and replacing old mixed forests with sapling monocultures is turning forests from carbon sinks into carbon sources.
On thursday morning (14th november) there will be a hearing at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. A group of NGOs is taking the European Commission to task for facilitating the greenwashing of burning biomass, and this film gives some of the on-the-ground context from Estonia and Denmark.
The film is approx. half an hour, then there’ll be space afterwards for discussion with unwisemonkeys who shot and edited the film, as part of a project with NOAH (Friends of the Earth Denmark).
