What is a Community House?
We will go much more in depth with that at the introduction meeting. But in short: A physical space where we can:
- meet, lagh and party together.
- educate ourselves and others.
- counsel and help each other.
- organize for collective action against the injustices we face in our lives.
What issues does the Community House organize around?
All the anxiety provoking shit that makes our lives difficult and instable. Just to mention a few: Salary theft, insecure working conditions, absurd rents, lack of health care rights, harassment, obtaining permanent residency -or citizenship status and navigating the rigid rules of the Danish social service system.
A lot of organizations, communities and individuals are already offering different kinds of counseling and help around these issues. The aim of the community house is to connect all the dots. To have a space where organizers from different backgrounds can co-work, meet and educate each other. And to create a space, where we have the capacity to deal with the wide range of issues that many people are struggling with.
Examples of activities at the Community House?
- Free and anonymous drop in consultations about labor, migration and social rights.
- Translation and assisting people in their legal/social cases.
- Mutual aid, where we ask those we help to help others.
- Dinners, bike fixing, movie nights and other community events.
- Courses on how to organize others and build strong communities.
- Spreading and sharing information about ones legal, social and labor rights in various languages and written in a way that’s easy to comprehend.
- In depth education about one’s legal, social and labor rights from a peer-to-peer perspective.
- Solidarity actions directed against those who cheat and exploit us.
…And whatever we come up with 😊
I got my own problems… Why should I get involved in The Community House?
We know you are busy. But that’s exactly why we need to come together. Creating a strong group of organizers from different backgrounds will enable us to move past “just” helping people with their current issues and start building power. We aim to de-privatize our seemingly individual problems through collective action and mutual aid."
The aim of the community house is to engage, educate and develop leadership amongst people who are directly impacted by the injustices we organize around. In other words: We want to grow the number of people who know their rights and know how to push for better rights (which in time hopefully will make you less busy).
Who are we?
We are all activists and organizers with different experiences and backgrounds. Some of us are migrants, others are Danish. Some of us have experiences with helping refugees, tackling and translating the Danish social security system. Others have experience counseling and organizing migrant workers either through union activism or through the former Migrant Center.
Community House is an independent organization and is run by the people who are active around the house.
